If you ever have been or are currently a dad of little children you will most likely be able to relate to the bouts of rejection and feelings of inadequacy of dad-hood that your little children “unknowingly” put on you.
Sounds extreme huh? Well it is. You see, my wife would tell me its just because I don’t have a breastaurant for the little tikes to pull a stool up to. But I think it goes beyond the boobffet.
Here is what I’m talking about.
Why, when kids are little (about 4 years and under), is the only way to get them to want to come to daddy instead of mommy is by bribing them with a sucker or telling them they can play a game on your iPhone?
You see soon to be dads… I already know that you cannot understand who allowed you to take this kid home in the first place, but soon you will have to face the fact that at every turn, hunger, cry, stumble, hurt, hick-up and smile your little angel will run to mommy.
When your child falls and hurts their knee, THAT IS DADDY TIME RIGHT? Well, once you pick them up and they scream even louder for mom you’ll know.
When your 4 year old daughter runs up to you when mommy is not around and says, “Here dad I drew this for you!”. Then you look at it and it says ‘Mom’ on the bottom corner, you’ll know. (Yep, happened to me this morning.)
When your 8 month old screams like she has colic with you, but once mommy grabs her she is A-Okay. You’ll think, ‘Mom didn’t even have to offer that kid the boob.’ Then you will know.
When for over 1000 days straight (that is no exaggeration… do the math) your kid asks for Mommy to read stories tonight for bed, and cries when Mommy says no its daddy’s turn. Yep.
I have created a graph to help further explain.
There is this unwritten rule somewhere for little kids that Mom is better than Dad. Hey I thought it was true when I was a kid (sorry Dad).
I can understand it though. Moms are nurturing, caring, can be a little crazy but all in all they are the best place for kids to go to.
But here is where it rocks being the dad. You know how things that are rare are more special and mean even more to you? Well every once in a while your kid will pick you over everything else in the world. Now I am telling you, you will never have a better feeling inside than when this happens.
When you hear a cry outside and your baby yells out, “I need Daddy!”.
When you head over to grandpa and grandmas house to pick up your child, and even though they can barely walk they try to run down the hall with their arms out yelling, “DADDY!”
When they want to cuddle with you before they go to bed and they reach out and hold on to your ear.
When they wrap their little arms around your neck and squeeze as hard as they can… There is nothing like it.
